How to Use Plastic Static Mixers to Achieve The Ideal Bonding Effect?

People who often come into contact with glue should be familiar with two-component glue. The structural glue can be better than the general glue, plastic static mixers play a role that cannot be ignored. The static mixer tube mixes the two-component structural adhesive in a certain proportion so that the structural adhesive has the performance of adhering to huge load-bearing objects.

How do static mixing tubes work? How is it used? Let’s take a look together!

We usually find adhesive products with different systems of one-component and two-component when using structural adhesives. The two-component adhesive is composed of two components, A and B. Before use, the two components need to be mixed in a certain proportion, and the cross-linking reaction can occur to cure and provide good bonding performance. At this time, the “artifact” of the static mixer is about to debut!

Static mixing tubes, which do not need to be driven by an external force, only use the fluid itself to pass through the mixer to perform continuous cutting and overlapping to convert the two materials into a uniform mixed solution. There are usually round mixing tubes and square mixing tubes. Automatic coating equipment mostly uses round mixing tubes, while manual gluing can choose square tubes or round tubes.

The working principle of static mixer pipe
The working principle of the static mixer pipe is to let the fluid flow in the pipeline to impact the mixing section blades, increase the velocity gradient of the laminar flow of the fluid or form turbulent flow.

During laminar flow, the liquid is mixed evenly by continuous “merging→splitting→position shifting/reversing→re-merging.”

Q: How many portions will the liquid be divided into after passing through the entire disposable static mixing tube?
A: A disposable static mixer usually arranges 6~24 mixing blades. Generally, we recommend using 18-24 mixing tubes. Divide the liquid into 2 equal parts each time it passes through a mixing section. When passing through the entire mixing tube, the liquid has been divided into 26-24 parts, which is simply “astronomical.”

Correct use of static mixer tube
In the process of user use, to achieve a good bonding effect, the mixing of two-component adhesive is the key. If the static mixing tube is used improperly, it will cause severe uneven mixing; two-component adhesives cannot achieve the expected bond strength if they are not mixed effectively, resulting in bond failure. Let’s take a look at a typical mixed-use failure.

Since the mixing tube has not been replaced for a long time, the mixing blade in the mixing tube has lost its cutting effect and cannot evenly mix the two components of AB.

Therefore, as a key component for mixing two-component adhesives, a static mixer tube needs to be used in accordance with standard usage specifications. As a consumable, it needs to be replaced regularly. The hand-held stick packs automatically mix the correct volume ratios of each component. If the color is evenly distributed, it is well mixed. After mixing, the adhesive cures quickly.

Specific operation steps
Attach the cartridge to the gun and remove the end cap from the cartridge.
Squeeze out a small amount of adhesive and make sure the sides are flush to keep the push rod flush. From an environmental point of view, the extruded adhesive is mixed with a small stick and disposed of. (Chemical waste before unmixed, solid waste after mixed reaction)
Attach the disposable static mixer and extrude the adhesive as long as the mixing tube (discard it).
The adhesive is applied to the substrate and the bonded parts are brought together during the working time of the adhesive. Clamp and fix until the adhesive reaches the initial curing strength. Do not re-expose the adhesive to air after the parts are attached. The position of the bonded parts should be adjusted by sliding to ensure alignment.
